I just purchased this coin. It is a PCGS AU-55. I had been watching this coin for several days. I've needed an upgrade for my type set, and this one fit the bill perfectly. These coins often have weak strikes in certain areas, but this one is nice and even all over. Strong details with some underlying luster beneath a rich tone. Copper hasn't really been a focus in my type set, but this one just really caught my eye.

And I can see why it caught your eye!
That is one pretty coin... This is a poorly struck series, and yours seems to be no different, on the eagle's breast.
It is a nice coin, and the reverse is kinda cool looking, looks likes two different tones... That is pretty sweet
    Congrats! :D

Yes, you are correct, somewhat. The eagles breast has some weakness, but some of that is wear too. It's the high point of the coin, and it graded AU-55. What I was referring to more was that many of the flying eagle coins are practically lopsided. Some details very strong, and other details basically so weak that they merge with the fields. Here is the example that is currently in my type set. It's a great original coin, with a decent obverse. However, the reverse is incredibly weak, to the point where you can barely read the lettering. The "ONE" wants to become one with the fields...:D

What's even more interesting though is the strength of the reverse rim. It's much stronger than the obverse rim, even though the devices are decidedly more faint.

The raw one pictured, has wear, the AU55 you have bought, has less wear, and I think the eagle's breast is just poorly struck
Yes I see what you mean, on the raw one...
    "ONE" is quickly "one".. LOL!!!

    VF25-VF30 :)
Would be higher, if the reverse had better detail, WEAR+Weak Strike=OH NO! LOL Nah, it just equals a lower grade...
You have a nice coin :)

Very nice AU Flyer - as you said, they are hard to come by as well struck as you have, especially those darn tail feathers. And AU is such a sought after grade, good job!

That is a vey nice coin!

Johnny, that is a very nice FE you have there. Nice, even surfaces with no spotting, and hardly any wear. I gues that is why it made it into a PCGS holder.

The Flying Eagle design is MY favourite US coin design. In my opinion it embodies in a simple but symbolic way the spirit of America.

I only have one in my collection. I am looking for an 1858 now.

Thanks for the complements guys! I have only 9 more holes to fill to complete my XF/AU Dansco 7070(including highly modified gold page). Only 5 or 6 are XF so far, with the rest at AU or better. I have to admit, this has become somewhat of an obsession.... I'm not going into debt, and I am paying all my bills and saving for retirement; but nearly all my entertainment money has been going towards coins. The way I see it, the money would otherwise have gone towards, electronics, video games, car mods etc....so coins is a much better way to spend my money in a way that better retains value. However, I do think I am addicted to this hobby, can anyone else relate?

Once I receive my newp's, I will photograph my type set collection as a whole page by page.

I owe a lot of my progress to this forum and the inputs I received from you all.
