    My Recent Thai Coins

Saw this thread and could not resist posting a few of my Thai coins. I have a few along with some mint Thai bills since my wife is Thai. We go to Thailand once or twice a year and on our next visit I plan to hunt down some coin shops to find some nice uncirculated older coins to have graded. The two graded coins here were sent off to WINGS, the new service similar to CAC for graded US coins and they are on their way back to me. As soon as I get them, if they have the stickers, I will post the pics. I got this cool off center strike this last weekend here in Raleigh at the coin show. Do you have the new reference? I highly recommend it, and his shop in Bangkok.

Medoraman, you will have to educate me on who you are talking about. I don't know what the new reference is and I certainly don't know where his shop is in BKK but I'd love to know where to find it on my next trip.

Siamese coins, from funan to the second reign by Ronochai Krisadaolorn. Best english language book on early thai coins. It just arrived in the US a few months ago. I still have an extra shrink wrapped copy if you trouble finding it.

Btw, i hear its sold out in Thailand. It comes as well with a nice photo dvd.

Btw, my wife is thai as well keemao. Is collecting thai coins getting yours interested in coins? Its not really working with mine, but i think she is proud we can display all of these thai coins at temple to educate thai-farang kids on their heritage.

The name keemao is just for fun but my wife keeps telling me to stop buying Thai coins although she knows I will be looking for more when we get over again. I am not sure how extensive my Thai collection will ever be so not sure I'd want a whole book on ancient Thai coins but I would like to know where the shop is if you can give me the info.

I will try to find the address.

Btw, no offense meant, but if you are going to collect early Thai up to Rama V I think its very shortsighted to not wish to own such a book. My own experience in Thailand is lots of fakes, even from some dealers. OTOH, I have found real coins from non-dealers. Given such an environment, I cannot comprehend how you would not wish to own a respected book showing loads of pictures of authentic and false coins. He even shows you how real pod duang were made, and how fakes are made, and therefor how to tell the difference. Just my opinion. Above and beyond that, he shows early trials, laws regarding coinage, etc that brings this ares of numismatics to life.

I'm trying to ID the date on a Thai 10 Baht. Where are the dates?

Here's mine, with a closeup on the reverse at 3:00 (the main difference I can see between mine & the image in Krause... which is always tricky b/c sometimes your date is the date shown):

Trying to use the Krause guide to Thai numbers, the closest I can read is 2533 (1990) but my book doesn't show any minted that year.

The wiki page lists 100 made that year though... I wonder why? And, how on earth would I have found one of those rare ones in a coin shop's junk bin?

My Thai wife says 2548 is the Thai year on the coin so it's easy to figure out from there.

I understand what you are saying but right now I am building my Morgan coins more than Thai coins. My wife cautions me all the time about whether a coin is fake or not and I have purchased counterfeit Trade Dollars in Laos so I know there's plenty of that around there. I'll try looking up the book online and see if I can get a feel for what it is like, etc. I may want it down the road when I am ready to delve deeper into some of the Thai coins. I have a lady friend in BKK that buys lots of the comm. stuff that comes out and stashes it all for sometime in the future. Love to get her to part with a few gems one of these days.
