You can make one up with all the parts available at Home Depot for a lot less.

A copy stand is well worth it for shooting flat work! There are a lot of options in copy stands so shop around. The link is just for your reference not a suggestion to shop there, though I highly recommend the dealer. Try to buy one locally at a photo supply specialty store so you are not paying for shipping, the base on some can be large and heavy adding to the cost of shipping. The expense of buying one with proper mounts compared to the time and effort of buying parts and building one yourself is well worth the money spent and any frustration of DIY saved. Proper, quality photo equipment is something to invest wisely in as it will serve you long and well. Of course if you feel up to the idea of building your own, go for it!

these copy stands are all snazzy and all but I didn't care to pay 100 dollars or more on one. These monoliths are made to take pictures of art work or documents, I opted for a smaller model with no lighting as I already had two photography lamps. The small macro copy stand which is great for taking images of coins or other small items only cost me 22 dollars or so.

This is an ebay link to the exact same copy stand I use

I use a Testrite copy stand. My camera is Nikon D-300 with a 105 mm macro lens. The setup is fairly heavy so I needed something that could handle that much weight. The Testrite copy stand fits the bill.

I don't use the lights that came with it. Instead I use a couple of adjustable deak lamp or elbow lamps. I find I have much more control over the lighting that way.
