    Hello everyone..
well what i got is several coins that i got at auction last weekend and i think there pretty nice but as i have just started to learn more about grade and mint state i wanted to see what you all think of my grade.

I followed the grade scale ie. pcgs, ngc.
    1924 Peace dollar

    suface preservation- 4 x 2=8
    strike- 4
    mint luster-4.75
    eye appeal-4.75
    total=21.5---- ms 66

ok the pics are ok but the one thing that im not sure of at 1:00 there it a fair rim ding how much will that knock off?
mint luster might be higher.. its very frosty.. all over best peace i have seen so far.. they always seem so wore ,
strike .. i dont really know if the strike is as weak as im grading.. the hair is not truly defined as others.. but the luster covers all the hair so its not like its wore down.. just not deep
over all it a nice coin..

    what do you think

    thanks mark

There appears to be some wear visible on the hair. Gotta go with MS-55.

Tell ya what mdr - I understand why you presented the pics that way to illustrate the luster, now show us one of the coin taken straight on. Don't worry about the luster showing, just get full light on the coin and take a pic from directly above it. Then I can help you with the grading and explain why I think what I do.

For what it's worth, my initial opinion based on these pics is MS63.

I would like a closer pic but I'd say MS64.

A word of friendly advice about coin pics - when you crop them, do so in such a manner that all of the coin is visible in the pic. Don't cut off any edges.

To me, one of the biggest limiting factors for this coin are the rims. There are several rim dings, but that one above the R on the obverse is so severe that the coin might be considered damaged and ungradeable. But when it comes to damage something like that could go either way, so for the sake of argument I will assume the coin is gradeable. There are a couple of other severe hits on the coin, most noticeably on the neck and smaller hits on the chin and in front of the face. The reverse has a couple of small hits as well.

Quality of strike is not the best on this coin, of course Peace dollars are known for that. But the '24 is generally found well struck. This coin is not really, the strike is so weak in fact that even the rim is not fully formed. On the reverse, by CA, the rim almost blends with the field. The same is true of the same area on the obverse.

The coin does have good luster and generally good eye appeal. But the factors above would outweigh these strong points and in my opinion limit the grade to MS63.

Concrete, is that grafitti on the neck? It looks like someone carved or into it.

That stuck out to me too.
