Hi all! I was wondering if there is a way to test a coin to see if it is simply discolored or if it is missing a clad layer.

    Thanks,

    Weigh the coin.

If the weight is inconclusive, then soak it in Acetone to see if the color disolves (like a cocacola stain would disolve).

Weight is usually conclusive. A clad coin that has lost one clad layer will be about 25% light.
