I do a bit of buying on Ebay. usualy about 8 items a month or more. The items are mostly mint and proof sets which are for the most part pretty safe. I buy these on Ebay because some people are not very wise in their wording and presentation and I can usually find some really cheap sets. Any time I can buy a proof set for 3.00 Im happy. I've done it a couple of times. any time I can get a set for <$10 including shipping I am happy. The fat nickle I asked about in error coins was broken out of a 1968 proof set that I got for <$10 the case was banged up but since it's the second one I had I decided to break it and used the coins for other sets I am collecting. Like a proof Kennedy set. If the nickle is a think plancet error I think $10 for the set will be an awesome price to pay.
I picked up 4 rolls of 1964-D silver dimes on eBay yesterday for $80+$5.40 shipping. The purchase is for my 'junk silver' box, but I will have 200 dimes to check for Doubled Die Reverses or anything else that is numismatically interesting. No dealers in Mpls./St. Paul, MN would sell these dimes for that price. My next buy will probably be a non-bullion item unless I can find a 'lot' that combines both for a low price. Those are my favorite buys and I've gotten some unbelievable deals on occasion. -Jeff
I bought an 1852 3-cent silver (Fine) for $14 plus S&H a few months ago- from England! The Royal Mail envelope and stamp were interesting, also.
e-bay i tried to bid something from e-bay and always lossing. anyway, i am new on this line. should i keep bidding upward?. that might be expensive. so right now, i am still zero.
I bought a beautiful 1914D Lincoln in XF from a guy in austrailia for $105.00, but the shiping cost was over $20.00.
Yes I received the coin over 6 months ago. Its not certified, but I did run it by my coin shop dealer he is a member of ANACS and I trust his opinions. He agreed with the grading and asked if it was for sale.
Is he a member of the ANA or does he work for ANACS??...you see where people have to get memberships to PCGS and NGC NANACS is open to anyone.... If he is just a member of the ANA...all that means is that he paid $32 a year and gets his name on a card....I suggest that you get it to ANACS/NGC/PCGS and have it slabbed. I trust my dealer too...but if its a key I want it slab...either before I buy it or soon after I do.... Speedy
I would agree - there are an awful lot of dealers out there who think they know what they are doing but do not when it comes to authenticating or grading coins. Think about it - where do you think all those altered or counterfeit coins come from ? Do you think they are just sold by individuals ? Where did the individuals get them ? The vast majority of the altered and counterfeit coins have passed through the hands of a dealer, and usually several dealers - at one time or another. And the vast majority of those dealers thought the coins were genuine. But they were wrong.
I have only recently started buying from ebay because I like to examine the coins before I buy the. But I have to say, it has been a great experience so far. I have been buying mostly Kennedy proof coins that are uncertified. some of the coins have values of around a couple of bucks and others are in the 10-15 dollar range. I'm trying to get my hands on a 1998-s matte for under 275. It's the only coin I need.
But there are many coins that you can't get from the mint....Ebay is a great place if you know about the coins you are looking for...sure...you can get ripped but you need to have the know-how before you go.... Speedy
