I made a few mistakes over the years. I thought it would be cool to build an IHC proof set in the 63 range. After a while I knew it was more money than I first thought.
Wish I could take back some of my mistakes.

Complete US gold set, starting in 1795, ending in 1933. Includes every gold coin ever minted US soil. Unfortunately I never got a single coin for that set yet :)

I guess for me, a lot of Russian type sets are now impossible to achieve. I've tried to collect all Soviet circulated coinage which proved to be difficult. In particular trying to attempt a type set of the Tsar coinage is just attempting to play with Tsar Bomba (most powerful nuclear bomb ever made)

I've also started doing a Japanese and Korean set (both also tough choices) - in short I might as well sell them all and see what I can get. There are some coins that I have not seen in the market for more than 5 years!!!!!!

I wanted a BU problem-free Dansco 7070 set including the gold page... all MS coins. It was extremely difficult to find problem-free classic coins that were affordable. Eventually my patience and funds ran out. Then life happened and that partially done set got sold to pay for a move, new fence, and new baby expenses.

I inherited a partially filled Dansco of Morgan dollars many years ago. I decided to start adding to it but lost interest in it about 4 years ago since I have no real hope of completing it.

Still, the collection started with my great-grandmother pulling a few Morgans from circulation. 4 generations have added to it.

I hope that either me or my children will be able to add to it some day.

A seated quarters date/mm set. Tough and expensive set to complete due to the size, and I realized I liked other sets better.

For the longest time, I enjoyed building my Morgan VAM set, but then LVA started going crazy attributing all sorts of oddball VAM's like the "Scribbles". That's when I gave up on them.

Years ago, read late in the 1970's, I was working on a set of Morgan dollars in PL & (what is now called) DMPL. I did realize that there were many that I could never afford to purchase, but it was fun.

Due to the unfortunate circumstances of a failed marriage, read: divorce, I had a bad taste in my mouth for nearly everything.

I sold most of the coins, and this was at a time when PL's & even Cameo DMPL's sold for little to no premiums.

And there was just a very few who collected VAMs.

I also started a Seated Dime & quarter sets, and got many low mintage pieces.

I gave up finally when I couldn't find nice pieces that were not stupid money. I have to get around to selling these off.

I even have a nice 1883 NGC F-12, with a mintage of only 15,439. When I get the time I'll sell them off for more Bust $1/2's.

I guess I would refer to a couple of my sets as currently inactive. I haven't bought a BU Washington quarter in quite a while. I just find it hard to spend hundreds or more on the d and s mints of the 30's for some reason. I have never really worked the Morgan dollar series. I occasionally will get one from a collection I buy.

When I was in my early 20s, I had this crazy ambition to try to do a series of every US coin. Grade wasn't so important as completing the series. I started with Lincoln Cents and got all the way to 1998 I believe (I only need the S VDB and 1914-D to be complete sans varieties like the 1922 no D). I then went to nickels and dimes. I got a series of all Jeffersons and Roosevelt Dimes sans proofs. I then got a series of Kennedy Halves and Eisenhower Dollars, proofs included. I got the State Quarters 1999-2008 sans proofs. I fizzled out in the Quarters, Mercury and Barber Dimes, Franklin Halves, and Buffalo Nickels. I still have a lot of the series I was chasing and I will add to them if/when possible, but I've given up all that craziness and decided on an XF or better US Type Set (stopping in the 90s, I don't like the new nickels, cents, or quarters really). I accept that I might have to settle for lesser grade items early and pre 1800. It's still pretty darn expensive and will take me a lifetime (hopefully my future children will pick up where I left off).

I am currently in the process of doing just that! Of course, I am finding it hard to find the early coinage (mainly copper) that suits me. I think I will give in and just put together a nice circulated set and keep all the pretty MS coin I have accumulated until I find something out of my price range and hopefully trade/ sell them to acquire the ones I need

I have several Mercury dime sets; all missing the 1916-D.
All my Lincoln sets are missing the keys. My nice Indian head cent set is missing three coins.
The Dansco 7070 is missing the two early dollars. I will never finish those sets.
I started a Barber dime set and it took years to complete.
Also did a Barber half set and it is complete, but took 5 years.
Both Barber sets cost way more than I ever thought.

    You didn't try the quarters?

The 1896 S and 1913 s are obtainable, the 1901 s is expensive, go for an AG

Treashunt: Nope I didn't dare do Barber quarters. It was enough doing the dimes and halves. The last dime I bought to finish was the 1895-O. My 1892-S and 1892-O half dollars are slabbed because I couldn't find raw ones I liked.
I also bought the 1896-O dime slabbed. Then I found a decent one raw much cheaper.

I have been working on the dimes in AU for years!
I'll probably never finish them, in AU anyway.

I have the set done, but need to upgrade:
1893 O XF have AU slab
    1894 O VF
1895 P VF have unc slab
    1895 O VG
    1895 S VF
    1896 O F+
1896 S XF, have unc slab
    1898 O VF
    1899 O XF- #2
    1900 O VF
    1903 P VF unc slab
    1903 S F
1904 S XF, have AU PL slab
    1905 O XF
    1906 O XF
    1909 D XF
    1910 D XF
    1910 S XF
    1910 S XF
    1912 D XF, unc slab
    1913 S VF

    Room to improve.

The half $'s are far worse, average about F to VF.

The quarters have a way to got, complete, but too many to list.
But, many AU, uncs, and some PL's.

Morgan silver dollars, proof and circulation Franklin half dollars, and circulation Walker half dollars. I completed the sets, but sold them off over time, and pursued something else. I kept most of the CC Morgans. I had a complete set of graded proof ASE's but sold the 1995-W for a good profit and don't plan to replace it. I still add to it every year including the bullion piece. After coin collecting for 60 years, I'm now looking at large sized U.S. paper currency and fractionals. I have a type set of most of the fractionals. I'm trying to condense and make it easier for my children to liquidate my collection, if they choose.

For me, a high grade Barber Half set, way beyond my pocket book. This series has seen dramatic price increases in the past few years.

Long ago, the set that gave me the most satisfaction was a circulated ag-vg set in the Dansco 7070 (without the gold). All the coins were problem-free and had a similar, matching look to them. I miss that set....

Liberty nickels framed in an old coin board. Missing the 3 keys.
