It seems like collecting rolls of US coins is a lot more popular than it used to be many years ago. Do you guys think that buying rolls from the mint are a good investment? If so, does it make sense to open them looking for particularly pristine coins? Or is it best to safely store the unopened rolls somewhere?
Mint rolls Check out the appreciation on these babies. The true test will be about 5 - 7 years down the road to see if the prices hold. BWJR
As far as I know, the coins rolled at the Mint do not have any special handling, yet you pay a premium for them. If you wait for them to get to a bank, you can get them at face value. I'll opt for the bank every time
Back in the '60s collecting rolls was about the most popular thing there was. Everybody, but evrybody, collected rolls. The prices rose of course, kind of like they are doing now but to a much larger degree. And of course the prices fell by the end of the decade until it got to the point where you could hardly give away rolls. Will history repeat itself ? Maybe - maybe not. But the real question you should be asking yourself is - do I like rolls well enough to collect them regardless of what the prices do ?
It seems unlikely such a trend could get very far off the ground again simply because rolls dated before 1999 are mostly unavailable. These coins simply weren't saved. When it was popular in the early/mid '60's there were lots of older rolls and even some scarce rolls dating back to the early 1930's. Today virtually all of the clad rolls are very scarce to virtuall non-existent and it seems likely this would derail any large scale collecting of rolls.
