I am having trouble yesterday and today with getting to the Teletrade web site. Is anyone else haveing problems or is this strictly a local issue?
I can't either which is incredibly annoying since I can't find out if I won a bid or not. This was really poor timing for them to go down. If I got outbid, I couldn't even rebid to try and win!
Just called Teletrade and got a recording that there is a major power outage at their server location and last nights auction was cancelled and rescheduled for Friday Oct 19th. Teletrade phone # 1-800-949-2646
Seems like a company whose whole business depends on network access would sign up with a hosting company that has multiple levels of backup for all critical facilities. Especially power. I bet there is more to the story than a simple power outage. Thanks for the quick replies so I don't spend any more time figuring out what I had done to screw up network access. I had been playing with my nameserver resolution processes and the problem showed up as not being able to get an IP address for the site - i.e. their nameservers are affected also. I guess it is just watch and wait time now.
Even if Teletrade does use a hosting company, this does not guarantee they will not have power or other issues. I work for a company that provides ASP access to database warehouses for some of our customers. We use a hosting site for this to minimize the potential for various problems. However, we have had power issues when both the primary and backup power sources failed (one due to technical issues, the other to human). Even with UPS support, the servers eventually were brought down as the power could not be restored before the battery backup would expire. Anyone who has experience with managing computer servers can tell you that all the redundancy in the world can not guarantee 100% that there will not be any issues that bring down a bank of servers. I've been in the industry long enough to have seen some amazing sequences of coincidences cause crashes with servers that were supposedly crash-proof.
I'm still lost as to why people use teletrade anyways. From a buying standpoint it looks like the place to go, but from a selling prospective I rarely see prices on teletrade higher than what you get on ebay. Furthermore, with ebay I can have a sale done in a few hours with the right buy it now and the funds in my account within a few day. It just amazes me that sellers don't say to themselves I can get more on ebay and I'll just sell my coins there. Once again, if you are a buyer of teletrade I think it is the best place to go, but for a seller I wonder and will continue to wonder why they go there. Maybe tradition, that is the only thing I can think of.
They go there because they can hand their coins off to someone else & be done with it. They don't have to write the listing, answer questions, deal with shipping each item, what payment to accept etc.
The site is still down! Hard to believe it's a power outage and that Teletrade does not have back up servers in alternate locations since there whole business depends on them!
I don't see any listing of an auction going on tomorrow? I had a nice bid in on a coin too, and was high bidder Speedy
Now the message is saying the auction is rescheduled for Sat Oct 20th and that details will be on the website.
Most places would be more likely to have backup T-1 or better lines rather than backup power systems. The company that I co-own has battery backups but even then that only lasts for under 10min's. Today we were upgrading and were down for maybe 1hr. If I was hosting a site like Teletrade I would for sure have about 2-3 servers in different locations all on different lines (if that was possible). I doubt that I could do differnt power providers though.... I would guess a company like Teletrade has and runs their own server. I bet that now they will not only run their server but they will get a backup in another state. Speedy
