Its pretty sad when you go to the bank and the people entrusted to take care of your money have trouble counting 50.00 in rolled change... My daughter and I just got back from the bank... I was depositing a check for a few bucks and thought it'd be a good time as any to depost a bunch of change I've picked though several time and rolled... I really hated to turn it in as I don't mind having jugs and jugs of change lying around to look at.... Anyway I had 3 rolls of Quarters ($30.00) 2 rolls of Dimes ($10.00) 2 rolls of Nickels ($4.00) 12 rolls of Pennies ($6.00) She counted it roll by roll, like six times, then said, "You said, you had fitty dollas, here." I said, "Yes, what do you get?", "I could have counted wrong." Knowing I had counted it three times myself and it was indeed 50.00... She didn't tell me how much she had came up with, just counted it like 3 more times and stared at me blankly... Again, I said,"How much did you get?" (I think I hheard crickets chirping) So, I counted it for her, out loud... I said,"10, 20, 30, 35, 40, 42, 44, (then pennies two rolls at a time) 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50... That is fiftey dollars... She just looked at me then typed it into the terminal and gave me a receipt for my deposit.... It was my daughters turn, she had saved up twenty three dollars (a twenty dollar bill and three dollars in quarters) I said,"Lay your quarters out in stacks of 4, so they are easier to count.".. I was still shocked at the trouble that teller had counting the rolls!!! Now I wished I'd kept the rolls, it never hurts to have extra coins laying around... Maybe I coulda put them in a dansco or something...
Since collecting coins, I find I try to get as much change as possible (as opposed to the old days of throwing in the nickle to round things out) and am amazed by those that can't give correct change if the machine doesn't tell them! Geez - my charge is $5.03 and I gave you $6.00 - and they can't figure out that it is 97 cents change and how to give that back! "is it 4 quarters? no -3 and how many dimes? " I just sit and watched a great mind at work.
Its nice to see today's people in customer service burn out their transmissions when they have to make change. It is to the point now where if the machine doesn't tell them what change to give back I do it automattically just to save the extra minute of my day as the teller roots through the change drawer desperately seeking that 62 cent piece.
I like how some of the fast food joints now have the cash registers that drop the exact change out into a bowl for you, so the cashier doesn't have to miscount it.... There is a Quizzinos Sub/Sandwich shop by me that has those.... I think Bread Company may have them as well.... No offence to the good people working there... We all have to work somewhere...
Well, the U.S. is known for having jobs for everyone, so those people who's mental ability is less than average have to work somewhere.
Dyou really want to stump them?, make them count your change back to you like they used to do years ago, I bet they can't even though the machine tells them how much to give back.....buy them books, send to school and what do they do? they eat the covers.... John
At the store where I used to live, you could see the cash register display (which was an LCD computer monitor), and it actually had a big picture of each coin, with a number below it indicating how many to give. In one of my computer courses in college, I had to prove that the greedy algorithm is optimal for making change with US coins (1, 5, 10, 25 cent). In other words, first choose the biggest coin possible, then the next biggest, and so on, and you'll get the fewest number of coins.
Please believe me when I say we have the same problem over here, a while back I was in a store waiting to be served when all the tills went down (woudnt show amounts bit would open) talk about panic LOL in the end a older member of staff who normaly just showd customers where goods where took over and began serving customers manualy I heard one check out girl comment 'How can she do that without a calculator ' LOL De Orc
