This denomination, introduced for a very short period by Tacitus, has come up for mention a few times here on CT before. They were marked XI or IA to signify a silver content twice that of the regular antoninianus, and were struck at Antioch and Tripolis respectively. Having picked up two examples of the rare XI-marked ones in the past couple of years, I had been keeping my eye out for the even rarer IA variety. That said, I'm not the most eagle-eyed or thorough of coinstalkers, so it was probably through sheer luck that I managed to pick this one up at a recent auction. The reverse is rather rough, and the first thing I did when I received the coin a few days ago was to put it under the microscope to confirm for myself that I was indeed looking at an IA rather than a KA (with a clogged die strike or scraped flan) on the reverse. I believe I'm good . Please share 'em if you've got 'em! TACITUS Billon Double Antoninianus. 3.05g, 24mm. Tripolis mint, Jan - Jun AD 276. New RIC V/1 Online temp no. 4113. Interesting. I have one example with the XXI but none with the other indications of silver content. I suspect @dougsmit has several to contribute
I'd like one of those double silver examples but have yet to get one. Tacitus (275 - 276 A.D.) Æ(S) Antoninianus O: IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: SECVRIT PERP, Securitas standing left, leaning on column. Ticinum mint 4.42g 22mm RCV #11812, Cohen #131, RIC V (1) 163

Cool & congrsts @zumbly I've only one very worn Tacitus, Alexandrian. And will spare you all the sight
WOW @zumbly, very very cool! I did not know there was a double-Ant! That is fun, and congrats, nice examples! Double-nce to have the rare IA ! I regret that I am substandard in this denom. I only have an Ant from Tacitus... RI Tacitus 275-276 CE AE Ant Providentia
We can’t get them all. You need to keep your eyes peeled for those ultra-rare Tacitus quinarii afterall .
I don't have any double denominations of his, just some antoniniani. Here's the first Tacitus I ever acquired.
I didn't know about the IA types, cool Z! What's that in ex? A little critter? I have an ugly vanilla Tacitus.
I have landed yet another double, from a different workshop.... Tacitus - Double Antoninianus Obv:– IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– CLEMENTIA TEMP, Emperor in military dress standing right, holding short eagle-tipped sceptre in left hand, receiving a globe from Jupiter standing left, holding long sceptre in left hand Minted in Antioch (A//XI) Emission 3, Officina 8. January – June A.D. 276 Reference:– RIC 211 Bust Type C. RIC Temp No. 4087 (6 examples cited). BNC p.436
Two is hardly several. Unfortunately one looks more silver and the other has better detail. I have no IA.
