    Yes, the bear was the symbol for Bern (hence the name) way before the "Russian" bear, of course both are Brown Bears! There is a dated 1492 Four Goldgulden, it already has the bear on obv./St. Vincent on rev.

    Hiddendragon has got to see this coin.

    He started a thread on "Coins and Bears," and seems to be really taking his "bear type" collection seriously.
