Here is a coin I picked up. I see on Numista here that coins after a certain date are marked with the year on the reverse. It also mentions that there are counterfeit coins of this type made in Romania, with false dates on the coin. I see that it specifically mentions the number "3" as one of the notable counterfeit marks. Is that what I have here? If this is a "3" then do I have something more than what I first thought? Does anyone have literature or confirmation either one way or another? Thanks, Evan
In my opinion, your coin does seem to fall in line with Numista's attribution. Nonetheless, you may wish to consult with some of these sources as well. It would also seem that these contemporary counterfeits made by the Suceava Mint are somewhat common. https://en.numista.com/forum/topic68498.html http://romaniancoins.org/falssuceava.html https://www.cointalk.com/threads/swedish-riga-shillings-or-suceawa-forgeries-help-needed.248766/ https://archive.org/stream/NIB2013JanFebVol48Nos01to02/NIB2013JanFebVol48Nos01to02_djvu.txt https://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-Pape...1&_ipg=50&LH_Complete=1&_fosrp=1&_nkw=Suceava https://www.ma-shops.com/arto/item.php?id=1946
Suceava mint is known for issuing a ton of fake small coins (polish, sweedish) ,even so ,if this is one of them, it's quite an interesting piece! Can't remember his name exactly , but apparently one of the 17 century moldavian voievods tried to issue some very poor quality copies of the dutch leeuwendaalders and seemingly he was carrying the dies with himself all the time The transylvanians across the mountains did it successfully under Georg Rakoczi I. Sorry for drifting away from the topic!
My apologies; I just realized that I made some minor mistakes in my initial response. I've gone ahead and fixed it for conciseness.
