Here's a coin that caught my eye at the recent show, due to two distinct, angular protrusions beyond the contour of the 2 in 1912. I should note there is a documented 1912/1 overdate, and I did not see these marks on another 1912 coin, so I doubt they are shoulders on a punch. Another interesting detail is the relief of the 2 is higher than the other date digits, which might suggest the last digit is punched independently into the die. Below I've shown how an overlay of the 1 predicts the position of the details on the 2.
Sweet coin, I like the rev of it alot! strange how the catalog lists the mintage for this coin with the regular 1912 mintage# being included to the overdate instead of the other way around.
Thanks! I was surprised to find this in a dealer's stock, especially at this grade. Funny how Krause lists the overdate first, since it's only one die. Given a total mintage of 3.2M, and how the dies probably struck 200-300K coins, this might be as common as 1:10. I also find the 1906/5 2 Ore at the same show. I'll post the pics sometime.
Very interesting Kurt, You have sharp eyes. Happy to see that i will enjoy your posts about errors on CT. :smile
