Here ya go, same pics I'm going to use on my site. Guess the grade, fresh coin, just arrived today. OOps, one pic is darker, still an accurate pic, I'll get better ones for the site.
I think it is a fine coin but would I be incorrect to think it might be cleaned. Do I see some green around the reverse rim and not that the inside of the letters is dark? Ruben
I think I agree with speedy F-15 as to the grade, but PCGS probably put it in VF 20/25range. My question is it wear or weak strike? To me it looks like wear across the front of lincoln. The reverse I think is strong VF. Just my opinion.
The hair, coat, and beard all show signs of wear IMHO, and the wheat on the REV does as well. I don't think this could be called partly a weak strike---on the left wheat ear is where I see a tad bit of wear. Nice coin non the less... Speedy
It's not strike folks, look at the O in One, the lettering, all there. 1909 dies are not worn yet, this coin always comes pretty nice. You wont see 1909 coins looking like they are from the 20's or the 50's. This is an honest coin, Wear only, no stike to mess with you. The reverse is more accurate then the obverse, it ( dark pic ) does not show the seperation well I guess. IMO, the coin sits exactly where it should in a PCGS holder. ( +/- 1 point per my thoughts)
I would go F-15, but since it is an desirable coin, I would not be surprised at a vf-20. I will watch for it. Jim
XF-40, weak strike?? Is the hair weakly struck, or is that my eyes? The reverse looks like a nice 45, but the obverse if I'm seeing things right keeps it at a 40 for me. Phoenix
There is NO way IMO that that coin is a F, or even a low VF IMHO, lol. That reverse is too sweet. Phoenix
VF-30 BN A coin with light to moderate wear. All major details will be clear and sharp. Some flattening in higher relief areas will be noted. Coins in this grade will usually show exceptional eye appeal for the amount of wear they exhibit. obverse - All hair detail will show, but the area just above the ear will show some light flattening. The outline of the ear will be complete, with some light flattening behind the ear. The cheek and jaw will be separated but noted areas of flatness will be present. All major details in the coat will be clear, with flattening showing only in the center of the collar and on the shoulder. All of the bow tie detail will be evident. reverse - All of the wheat lines will be visible and clear, although not sharp. Some earlier date examples, especially those from branch mints may not have 100% separation of all wheat lines. All wheat grain detail will be complete. Memorial cents will show light areas of flattening on the columns and in the cornice and roof area. The steps will be complete, except the lower center portion on weakly struck examples. The planters will show light weakness but will be complete.
Harryj, what grading standards are you using? I question because I thought that for a coin to make VF-20 period (unless the coin is weakly struck), it had to have full seperation of the wheat lines? Where the standards that you posted appear to disagree with that IMHO? Phoenix
http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/grading/grading.php I have a slabbed VF-25 1909 S VDB and Jacks does look maybe a little better.
I don't want to start a market grading versus ANA grading war. But just for the obverse around ear and bow tie for ANA: VF30: Ear and bow tie are slightly worn, but show clearly. VF20: Ear and bow tie are worn but bold. F-12: The ear and bow are visible. To me based of the pictures the ear and bow are just visible, with more details than F, but neither are bold. So that is why I agree with F-15. Now it could be there is more detail than the picture is showing, but I have to give my opinion based off the picture. Even when I look at the site you reference I see more detail around the ear and bow tie for the VF's or higher.
Great post Jack! I love taking in a coin like this and giving my honest opinion, then seeing if anyone agrees and if I'm in line with TPGs. My immediate reaction was, this is a F, not VF coin. I'd expect a VF to have much better detail versus wear. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice example. Nicely put! I agree with you. Specially the "war" thing. Allen
