I was browsing e-bay and noticed someone selling a silver one yen coin (scarce year) but the reeding looks suspect to me. I'm thinking it's a fake, but I wanted to see if anyone thinks so? It looks like the reeds overlap on the second picture. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1882-Japan-One-Yen-SILVER-Coin-MEIJI-YR-15-HIGHLY-Collectable-DRAGON-Coin-/300828732780?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item460aca2d6c
The devil's in the details. The second pic shows the edge and reeding really well. My guess would be that the coin is fake. The other pics don't look that good either, steer clear. :thumb:
I'm not sure the problem with the reeding isn't just lighting and camera angle, but this disturbs me: Correct weight is 26.96g with an extremely low tolerance. I'm sure the seller has at least one jewler nearby with an accurate scale. Also, diameter needs to be exactly 38.6mm. (The Chinese "replica" factories often use the later 38.1mm size for these.) The opening bid would be a bargain for the year and condition, so if I were interested I would be pressing the seller for the specs. I would ask for both the weight and diameter to be checked without mentioning what they should be.
