Ok, so iv done my bit of research and Susan B's were minted in 1979 and later but 2 days ago at work i found 2 Susan B's dated 1972. I didnt get a chance to snag them before my cash drawer was cashed out, but im positive they were 1972, and nothing about them appeared fake, I looked at them several times. The date was clearly minted and looked like any other Id ever seen, but didnt realize then that the date was wrong. I intend to see if they are still in the safe at work, but what do you think?
They were either tampered with or completely fake. I don't think any patterns were made until 1978. The Ike dollar (and my Cutlass 442) were still being made in 1972.
There weren't even any patterns made of the SBA dollar until 1978. So only possibilities are they're entirely fake, tampered with, or not what you think they are. Would love to see pictures in any case. Never heard of anyone bothering to fake a SBA. Only genuine dates of SBA dollars were 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1999.
If they are still at our store illl grab them, but iv had many Susan B's and I know what they look like and I agree, ive never heard of fakes, and no searches turned up any fakes online, just wondering if maybe its possible they were punched with the wrong date, I dont know if thats possible or not?
It could be a fake, my brother gave me a Chinese token, big coin with a dragon on it, he had 2 both were counterfeit, but they were identical to a normal one, that it by comparing coin vs picture.
The dates are put on the original hubs before the dies are made (at least that's the way it's been done the entire time SBAs have been minted). It would take the hub being misdated to cause a date like this, and I think it's infinitesimally unlikely that such a huge error could be made on the hub and not have been caught and corrected. I doubt something that big would have been missed even if some mint employee tried to do it on purpose. So I guess it's technically possible but extremely unlikely. So I'm sticking with my original theory: fake, altered, or not what you think they are. If you could post a picture would narrow down what's actually going on.
Just thought of that; I know many SBA dollars were mistaken for quarters, but didn't immediately occur to me the reverse is just as likely lol... Anyway, that falls into the "not what you think they are" category I guess. Take another look, they may just be normal genuine 1972 quarters.
im possitive they were SBA's because no modern quarter has a womans head on it and the eagle on the reverse is much different
