I received this box from my Grandfather who had just recently passed away. It was an old lock box which didn't have a key, it was in the original cardboard box. I figured it was empty as my Grandfather spent his later years going to garage sales and estate sales buying tons of cool random things. Anything I would mention or suggest he would find and buy three of them, lol. I had told him I wanted to get a small lockable safe to keep some things in. Anyways after he passed I was going through a bunch of items he left me and came across this. Talking to my Aunt she told me my Grandmother who worked at a bank collected these coins with my Grandfather and had been left untouched in the safe. I have yet to look through all of them to look for key dates ect... I'll post the results soon. Thanks for looking. Here are a few pictures of some of the coins. All are 1964 or older, some from the 1800's.
Love those pocket watches. Enjoy going through grandfathers holdings dear fellow. Hope you find something valuable, but even if not, they were from your grandfather, and he left them to you........that's very special.
Thanks, the pocket watches still work. Some very cool history, I was told he carried them when he worked on the railroad.
My grandfather left me some coins, which started me down this crazy path. Unfortunately it wasn't anything like what you have there. Pretty awesome.
Wow !!!!! What a priceless gift from both Grandparents . I love the old Elgin pocket watch as it was made outside of Chicago and is a quite well made brand . Your Grandparents undoubtedly thought a lot of you . You're a lucky man !!!!!
Sorry about your grandpa. Cool little stash he left you. Research those watches. If they are all railroad grade they are worth quite a bit. We're talking probably hundreds a piece. And that one with the cover looks like it might be yellow or rose gold
That is cool. Cherish the pieces. I have a similar story. We moved my grandma from Texas and she piggy banks full of coins that sge gave to me. I also think my grandpa collected ( passed away few years ago) because my mom said she found some folders but only grabbed the coins because they were buggy. But enjoy the coins from your grandpa.
Very cool man. I like the pocket watches too. Great stash. Its not always a given that stuff like that ends up with the grandkids. I know people with family problems and once the owner passes away, usually theirs a step mother,/step grandmother involved, that can't wait to take a box like that to the pawn shop and get a couple hundred bucks for 4 figures worth of actual product. Never mind the sentimental value. Sent from my XT1093 using Tapatalk
The Elgins are definitely Railroad watches the back case screws off and inside the case the jewelers would inspect and date and set and clean them, as the trains ran on set schedules and your watch could not vary 30 seconds either way. The other watches cant make the name out but Hamilton was named brand also some were 21 jewels and others 17 the one still has gold chain or watch fob on it. I also worked for the RR for 38 years and I got my grandfathers, fathers and mothers watches who also worked for the RR because the rest my brothers and sisters didn't pursue a railroad life and that was a smart move on their because its not the railroading it once used to be taking Pride in your job and talking with your customers along the way the lumberyards, grain elevators, and factories have for the most are by gones. ITS CALLED TECHONOGLY AS EVERY INDUSTRIES HAVE EXPERIENCED... GREAT COLLECTION OF WATCHES AND COINS......... ENJOY... ESPECIALLY ANY RR STORIES HE TOLD YOU........
