Suriname - is a small country in South America. It has an area 163821 sq.km. and population about 586000. Suriname was founded by Spaniards at 1499. In the middle of XVIIth century (in 1667) Suriname became a Dutch colony. At 1922 Suriname got a status of the attached territory of the Kingdom of Netherlands. Since 1954 - authonomous territory and at November 25 1975 Suriname became an independent republic. Republic of Surinam has an own currency - dollar of Suriname (since 2003). One dollar is equal to 100 cents of Suriname. First coins with the caption "Suriname" were released at 1962. Coins of the Republic of Suriname aren't expensive but interesting and not very common.

It is interesting that they went with the square design for the 5 cent but the typical round with the remaining denominations. Rarely is a choice made through purely arbitrary randomness. So I'd be curious as to the rationale behind this particular choice.
