Hey everyone. I am new here and had some questions. I have a hard time spoting some of the errors in the pictures posted and the magnification seems to be very high. After a while i can see them but when trying to spot them on coins i have i can never see them. I have heard a plethora of different opinions on what to use as far a magnification. What are your opinions 2x, 4x, 5x, 8x 10x 12x 20x? also what magnification should be used for grading?

Most graders use 5x, and in some cases 10x for extreme details or questioning in the grade

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

I'm so blind that I need all the help I can get whether it is just for grading or searching for errors and varieties. For me, I find it easiest to use my stereomicroscope for much of the smaller details. So, I guess personal preferences are relative to the physical limitations of the individual.

I use a 3X viewer, if I see somrthing i should take a better look at, I use a 5X, then if needed a17X. I try to use natural sun light also.

10x here. If it can't be seen with a 10x it's not worth that much.

thanks for the info i will probably just get a better magnifying glass then caue i currently use 4X. Also does anyone have any recommendations on a good light source for spotting error coins? or a good website that shows a regular coin compared to the errors? this would probably help me see the difference because some of the pictures people have posted here i find hard to see any doubling at all

Buy a stereo microscope. You can get them for less than $275 and have all the light you need.
