I just obtained this coin in a lot and was surprised to see the neat die clashing on both obverse and reverse. I did a quick search and I think die clashing on this coin / year is relatively common. This seems somewhat extreme though - does anyone know if it is at all "special" or is it just a cool oddity?
Very Cool Coin! However, I believe this is a back door mint job... Fact: A few dealers could order error or variety coins from the Mint on Demand.... I also believe that this is a flip over double strike, not a die clash.
I agree. It looks like a flip over double struck in collar error. I think it's just as cool, but this one being a striking error instead of a die error. It's in great condition and has great eye appeal.
Thank you all! I am learning a new phrase with the flip over double strike and I agree that is what it is. Super! The "back door mint job" idea is really interesting too.
Double struck, flip strike, 2nd strike in collar.... the coin is now in my collection, and I am very pleased to see one like this that is not dated 1969!! LotsofCoppers, thanks again for selling it to me!! :thumb:
Whoa SPP, jumped on that one quickly!! You might have to indulge us on how much something like this commands in the open market.
Woah, Nelly! Don't think those are die clashes, buddy, looks like it was double-struck within the collar! Much more valuable than any clashed-die error :thumb:
