I am so disappointed to receive the news that they have canceled FUN. I was going to have a large amount of gold coins graded by PCGS (I am too nervous not to hand my coins directly to the grading service) and sell off a lot of junk silver and buy better coins. Any guesses as to the show being rescheduled or will they just let it go until the FUN Show 2021 in January?
If they are run anything like the Baltimore Whitman Shows you'll just have to wait for the next regularly scheduled show. Both the spring and summer Whitman Shows were canceled. Next chance will be the Fall/Winter show in November. I think of it this way, I'm accumulating more money for more and/or better coins when I DO go to the next show.
That may feel like a good strategic move, however you may find just the opposite. Dealers are working harder than ever to find nice coins right now, and are unlikely to have more at the next big show than you have seen in the past. I've also observed a willingness on the part of dealers to compromise on quality within the grade, just to put coins in stock that they hope will sell. More importantly, if buyers save their money for that next big show, they may find little more than an increase in competition and commensurate higher prices.
I thought that increased competition caused prices to get lower. I've noticed a prominent dealer has a lot of material currently listed on eBay. And I found that I consider the prices of that material high. I'm looking forward to bellying up to his table at the November Whitman Show and finding what he'll be asking face-to-face. I don't know but I suspect dealers are VERY ready to sell at shows if they aren't doing very well at online-only auctions.
I think you're thinking of the competition between dealers - that's not it; it's actually the competition between buyers that will drive prices up...all those with money burning a hole in their pockets & finally able to spend it at any cost! JMO
As long as you use discretion & only go after what you really want & not "just because you can", I think you'll be alright...
What I was getting at was this . . . If all collectors save their money for the first big show to come along, and dealers recognize this, the prices at that show will not be as attractive as you’d like them to be.
