Just in time for the Fourth of July! I love Halloween. It's my favorite holiday. I was wondering today if there are any coins (or, failing that, tokens) that depict things that might have a Halloween flavor. Any Romanian coins depicting Vlad the Impaler? Any coins with bats, wolves, or spiders? Any ideas?
Well... the SBA dollar coin has a picture of the wicked witch of the west from the Wizard of Oz movie on it...
EagleEyed--that's cool! I'd not seen that before. And Cave Troll-- thanks for the suggestion, but that's not quite what I was looking for...
How I love Halloween. All Hallows Eve!!! But that is also changing as the politically correct are trying their darndest to ruin it too! Canada has done wolves on various coins and with a little luck you can find an owl or two. Go to Ebay and do a search under coins. Should provide you with something! Good luck! Are you a good witch or bad witch?
Did a search, couldn't find any commem coins for Salem, MA. Sorry P.S. If you've never celebrated Halloween in Salem, then you never really have
I have to dig a grave tomorrow for a morning service at work. I can put a roll of coins in my pocket while I'm working. Then maybe I can sell them as actual coins that came "from the grave". Hey, it wouldn't be a lie!!
That wouldn't be a problem. Put them in a little coffin shaped box with grave dirt. Can't get any more halloweenish than that! Of course remember, it's hallowed dirt!
I like this Polish coin: Eagle Owl of Poland If the rest of their bird series looks this good, I'll consider collecting them.
"Throws" Mardi Gras doubloons are perfect for Halloween. You can get them from advertisers in Numismatic News and Coin World for about 10 cents each if you buy several hundred. I have dressed up like a pirate to give them out. Many have scary monster, witchcraft, pagan themes. Others celebrate Greek, Roman or Egyptian gods, as well as popular books, movies, whatever, and even abstract themes such as "Wonderful Life" and "Magic Childhood" and so on. Typically, they are the size of a US Half Dollar, made of anodized aluminium in red, gold, purple, or green, as well as natural aluminum "silver." They are fun and cheaper than candy and great for Halloween. You will need to order twice as many as you think you will because you have to collect them yourself, of course, before you can give out your doubles. (They are called "throws" which is a pun. They are thrown from floats. They are also called "jetons" which means throws. Jetons are also tokens because they were "tossed" when gaming and gambling.)
Trick or Treat Not exactly Halloween themed, but I have also given out paper money of the world. Again, you can buy it by the ton from sellers in Coin World and Numismatic News. I sort them into likely kid age groups with the Byelorussian chipmunks and stuff like that for younger kids and the older, bigger and stranger ones for other kids. It is always nice to give Hungarian or Romanian money to a kid dressed like a vampire. For this, I have dressed in a tuxedo with a mask.
http://www.bermania.com/toppage2.htm that's a page from Allen Berman's site. He has a coin listed there: Silver ducat of Mircea the Old of Wallachia (1386-1418) These crude little coins with eagle crest were likely the primary coin used by Dracula, who struck no coins himself.
Are these they? These are from my personal token collection...I knew they had something to do with Mardi Gras, but wasn't sure exactly how they were used. They came from a large lot I bought a few years ago in order to get the 'good for' type tokens. (quarter for size comparision)
Rick--that's a really good one. I just copied the info from that site...I just might have to look for one of those. Thanks!
Mike, I read an article on the internet about a guy who gave out world coins at Halloween dressed in a tuxedo and phantom-of-the-opera style mask. Was that you? Those Mardi Gras throws are interesting and affordable. Thanks very much for the suggestion. They would also work well as game pieces for a game some friends and I play. EDITED TO ADD: Mike, it was you! Nice article. Thanks again.
Apologies for the late posting (been working wayyyyyy too much). You would be hard pressed to find a topic without tokens being related in some fashion. The Mardi Gras token suggestion is probably the best general type of token to find what you are looking for. There are a few Civil War tokens that were issued by undertakers, some with depictions of coffins (I think one even showed a face thru the viewing window). Some of these are available in the $10-$15 range for a decent example. I know off the top of my head that J.J. Diehl of New York City had a coffin on his cwts.
