This coin shows either a crack or some other oddity from about 2 o'clock to 10 o'clock and I am hoping some folks have seen this before and maybe offer some explanation as to what caused this. Thanks in Advance
I am not sure just what causes it. but that is not PMD. Here is another example of it, but not as extreme as yours. I have been attributing it to worn dies.
RLM Until I saw your fine example , I was starting to think it may have been caused by some form of corrosion that someone chose to remove and it took some of the coin with it. The real odd thing about this is that the reverse is very sharp for a well circulated coin.
Here is your coins twin in a bit better condition - PCGS MS-63. See http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1147&Lot_No=7381&LotIdNo=39059&ts=on#Photo
WOW ! I cannot believe that graded coin is selling for over 80.00 right now and I am selling mine for 99cent lol
1924-S's are common. Unc 1924-S's are very scarce. Unc 1924-S's with any red are extremely rare. Good luck if you want one well struck to boot!
I started thinking that mine was struck through grease because of how mushy the obv was compared to the rev. It just seems that most coins wear on both sides kind of equally. But you are saying that the 1924-S is known for weak strikes ?
I tell you what, I would of almost bet money that this cent was pmd. Its good to learn something new each day, great info...
Thanks to RLM.. .. and that link to the HA site , I will be sure to ask for more than 99cents for this one
