They were given out to those at the commissioning ceremony only.

I like the "Don't Mess With Texas" slogan on it. Nice touch.

Worth will be tough. I call these challenge coins and the military gives them out for various things like achievements that won't get a medal (like an "atta' boy) or to commemorate some event.

Someone who was there and didn't get one or someone who was stationed on the vessel who might want one will be your target market. Probably not a lot of interest for someone putting together a type set or an all date and mint mark set of Morgans, etc. Your best bet is to come up with a price you would be happy to get for it and put it on eBay. There are a few sellers on eBay who have hoards of challenge coins on eBay that sell coins for 28.99 or best offer that just sit and wait for someone to do just that. I've seen many coins go unsold for a long time this way.

I collect challenge coins but I get the ones that somehow relate to my career.

    Hope this helps.

I don't think I am going to sell it anytime soon, I was curious because I don't know how many people would be involved in the commissioning of a submarine. My cousin worked security at the event I believe. He passed it to my family and we recently rediscovered it while reorganizing the garage.
The only difference between this one and many of the other challenge coins would be the very limited mintage of it. I have only seen where 2 have been sold years ago on ebay and to find out how much they sold for I would have had to join some website that I didn't want to, lol.

Do you know who produced it? You might be able to contact them & find out how many were produced.

They were made for and given to certain people present at the commissioning ceremony only. The next time I see my cousin I am going to have to get some info from him about it.

But Jwt708 is correct in what he said about it, if I were looking to sell it the buyer would be someone that collects that type of challenge coin, a crew member of the sub or someone that lost theirs and wanted to replace it.

The target market for this challenge coin would be people who collect military challenge coins, those who collect submarine related items, or former and current sailors who served on the boat.

Realistic value for an item like this is in the $5.00 to $10.00 range. regular challenge coins typically sell for $4.00 to $10.00 though some sellers on eBay will price them much higher hoping for an impulse purchase by someone who doesn't know what they are really worth. It may have been initially given to those who attended the commissioning ceremonies but the company which struck them probably made more afterwards to sell to crewmen and collectors.
