Okay, I got a little over zealous while surfing ebay. I saw a really primo looking Walking Liberty and the phrase "COA included". The auction was going to close in less than a minute so I scrolled down to the bid box and saw that it was at $10.50. I quickly placed a bid, clicked on the submit button and refreshed the screen. I Won!! Unfortunately I was so impressed with the coin I neglected to look at the date. I didn't even know they made a 1987 Walking Liberty!! I'm guessing this is a replica, although I don't see the word anyplace. So, does this thing have ANY value? You can see it at the URL below: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3920964773&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT
Isn't that a silver eagle? If so, it is made of 1 oz .999 silver. The older ones are running in the high teens. You didn't get ripped too bad, if at all. Look it up under "Silver Eagle". Here is another: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39488&item=3921297908&rd=1 Looks to me like some of that "creative advertising" that is so frequent on Ebay.
I have one of those, dated 1996. It was bought from Littleton Coin Company for me by my parents as a birthday present when I first started collecting coins. As far as I can tell, (or believe, at least) it is legit. Not meant for circulation, but legit.
It isn't the walking liberty half dollar that you thought it was, I suspect, if you would read down further , it states that it is a Dollar coin, it is mainly considered silver bullion....I bought my 2004 silver eagle for 10.50, so no, you didn't get ripped off....
Lol, I only saw the front of the coin. Which resembled my walking liberty coins. I just that "silver eagle" was a nick name for it. Sorry, new to coin collecting.
Good, I get to throw in sarcasm too, if that's what you wanna call it, I get xf examples of WALKING HALFS for about 2.96 ea by the roll I get sliders for about 7 dollars for commen dates by the roll. Here comes the real sarcasm, and I don't wanna make this an insult or nothing, just sarcasm, good buy there osiris..... Gotta love my coin hookup
That's alright, when I first started collecting, and first started purchasing coins, I saw an ad for some cull indian cents for 1.50 a piece, needless to say I was depressed for a month from thinking that cull ment average circulated....It happens.
Boy is my face red!! Guess I'm pretty much in the wrong hobby if I can't tell the difference between a dollar and a half dollar. Nice to know I didn't get stuck with a replica, even if I did get blasted on the price. Someday it will go up though. I can see I came to the right place for help. Thanks for the info!! Lincoln64
$10.50 isn't that bad of a price. You have found a good site to learn about coins. Many here are very knowledgeable, and more importantly are willing to share that knowledge.
If this is the "stupidest" coin buy you ever make, then you will be VERY blessed! It may not have been what you expected, but the price wasn't too bad in any event.
Ziggy sure hit the nail on the head. I am a guy that almost paid $120 for a $15 Morgan replica a scammer was implying was a GSA Morgan.
You lucked out on this one. For what it is worth your dollar even comes in an envelope postmarked on the first day of the SE issue for that year. Not sure if that is worth anything to anyone, but it doesn't hurt.
I got the coin in the mail today. It's in a nice protective folder (maroon cardboard) with the words: 1987 WALKING LIBERTY U.S, SILVER DOLLAR printed in gold When you open the folder there is an envelope with the coin. When you open the envelope there is a COA card with a hole in it for holding the coin. There is a thin clear plastic sheet on both sides of the card. The plastic is not attached to anything they are just sheets. The problem is that the coin is held in place (on the reverse side) with a strip of clear adhesive tape. There is some "toning" around the edge, except where the tape contacts the coin. My question is, Should I remove the tape? Doing so will damage the cardboard holder by peeling away the outer layer of the paper. If I take the tape off it will likely leave some adhesive on the coin. If I leave the tape on the coin will continue to tone and have a stripe from the tape on it. Any suggestion?? PS the coin looks really good and has a profflike appearence
Let me get this straight - the tape is applied directly to the coin ? If it is - I would do one of two things. I'd either keep it as is and count it as a lesson learned. Or I'd take to to a coin shop - tell the owner I want trade it in on a plain unpackaged 1987 ASE - pay the difference & and take the new coin home and put it in an AirTite.
So...what I wound up doing was, using an x-acto knife, cut the tape between the coin and the holder. The tape came off the coin cleanly and the coin won't need cleaning. I still have the first-day-of-issue envelope, the cardboard holder and the COA, and I'm going to put the coin in a holder. So if I decide to list it on eaby, down the line, I'll just retape it (including the retaping part in the item description, of course), and all should be well.
