I was trying to get opinions about the authenticity of this coin on Forum. Apparently I didn't read the rules right, one is not allowed to link to Ebay. Well then, how is anyone supposed to check their theory on weather a coin is fake or not?!?!!?!? They may have smart people there at Forum, but the rules were...sldfjlskdjflksjdlfkjsldkjflksjdlfkjslkdjflksjdlfkjsdlkjflksjdlkjflk [redacted] ...designed horribly. Apparently Forum too good for this, so I'll let you guys have a crack at it. Rant over. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Roman-Tetra...152?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item461f463f58
Do not forget that whilst Forvm has a chat room/forum for discussion, it is also a very large coin sales website. I personally can understand why JS the owner doesnt like talk about values and other coin sales sites, but at the same time I believe it prevents the forvm being as useful and informative as it could be. I think the sales side hinders the freedom of the forum and the two should be on different web domains, but the traffic generated on the site by the very existence of the forum will help it rank very highly with the search engines, so again, its a clever move. As for the attitudes of some of the members...........most are helpful, but a handful of the regulars are just downright rude and I avoid it if i can.
It is quite simple. Post the images of the coin rather than the link to ebay. I have done this hundreds of times. I am an admin over there on the fake reports but am not really active on any boards nowadays.
^^^This. I completely agree with Joe's reasons for not allowing the vetting of auctions with direct links, and there are a handful of very good reasons. It's true that FORVM is more like a stuffy library and CT is more like casual coin club, but for sheer volume of indispensable information, there's no place on the web like FORVM. And every large group of people is going to have a few grumps. I would suggest not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
But do not mention its a prospective purchase. If Areich comes out with any clever/stupid remarks, ignore him, he's an oaf!
I've commented on Forum before and I agree with most remarks already made. However, let me add that when I have a coin I cannot attribute/identify and if I cannot get the answer here or elsewhere, Forum is the place to go. Very knowledgeable posters hang out over there.
They do, but some are so rude, i'd rather not know than have someone who is far up their own behind tell me. I saw a new member slated once for a slight breach for asking about the value of a coin, but the next week another well known member was asking about the value of a gold Roman coin and everyone joined in and he was allowed. Neither owned the coins, but it was one rule for one and another for the new member, it was embarrassing and I felt for the poor guy. I doubt he went back.
Whilst you were on Forvm you did get an opinion on this coin that is certainly worth listening to from someone who has more knowledge in this field than most anyone active on any boards though his alias doe not give away his identity. You can choose to ignore it if you wish but I wouldn't. The clarification that it is a coin of Marcus Aurelius rather than Antoninus Pius would have been a useful piece of information to bring across here. The year 3 type with a legend that seems to occur from year 4 is an alarm bell to go along with the others that you already have. There are members on Forvm who are allowed to discuss value, mention sellers etc. that others are not allowed to do and this is clearly set out in the rules. This is a right that they have been given that they do not take lightly. The majority of these do not typically partake in these activities. As with all the various boards around the web there are a range of rules and you can choose to stick by them or not. If you don't want to stick by the rules os a particular set of boards then don't use it. Having a go at one particulr board or other is not necessarily a wise approach as there are a few of us who partake in multiple boards and some people might take offence. A few members here used to partake on a different board until some were moved on and then they found a new home here. I personally have a fairly thick skin and don't take offence easily but I can say that as a fakes admin on Forvm I would have modified you post on Forvm in exactly the same way as it was sone if I had seen it first because those are the rules and they are easy to stick to.
Thank you for posting the images to Forum. How is this done? Agreed. It was a mistake to be so harsh. My intent on this whole matter was confirm or deny my suspicions that the coin was fake, in order to keep someone from being burned. I believe I missed the expert's opinion for the same reason it was insinuated I was interested in buying the piece, failure to read the whole post. I don't know about y'all, but I learned something today (Admittedly while being embarrassed, but hey, that's the best motivation!).
on the topic of the OP coin...it looks strange to be. weird bust for AP. i'm not familiar with the type also reverse type also, but i'm still a coin noob...so that could be it. i have a forum account and lurk there occasionally. check the fake reports frequently, actually i'm going there right now...
I post on forvm but I am not as active as I am on here. I lurk more then anything. Most of the topics are of no interest to me. Its stuff related to empresses, links to news stories, coins of the day and such I like. I read the fakes too.
Save the images from ebay to your machine. On Forvm you can get to the image attachment capbility using "Additional Options" from where you can attach up to five images. Martin
I am not one who easily criticizes, but my own experience with the forum being discussed has been disappointing - not very tolerant of less experienced members/posters.
I have only one response to make to what I can only take as a direct insult to me... So long and thanks for all the fish....
maridvnum, my sincere apologies to you, specifically. I can assure you, you are not the target of my somewhat ill-worded comments. Please do not consider this at all directed at you.
