Hey people! I'm trying to write a report on Jane Eyre, but got hung up on a little currency problem. Also, I know nothing about coins, but I found this forum and you guys seem to know everything... My question is, what was the currency in early 1800's France, and what would be the equivilant of about 20$ (current US)?
Well the currency at the time was the franc. The coins were struck in silver & gold and ranged in denomination from 1 franc to 40 francs. At the time - the US $10 gold piece and the French 40 franc were both approx 1/2 ounce gold coins. Hope that helps
Depends on what you mean by "equivalent." As noted already, that would be about an ounce of gold. It would be a FR100 coin, though I believe they did not exist then. The amount would have been in the form of five 20 franc coins. FR20 was about $4 US at the time. Jane Eyre was published in 1847 and the US $20 "double eagle" started in 1849. See, for example: http://www.cpror.com/cprorGB/guide/guide.html However... as for purchasing power -- which I think is your real question -- a modern twenty dollars today would be like 20 cents or 1 franc back then. Back then, the average free worker earned about 50 cents to 1 dollar a day in the US and less in Europe, one to two francs. Farm labor was at a lower wage. Michael
Writing an essay it's important skills that will be useful everywhere. From school draft years to actual reseach papers during your job. But nowadays many people don't even know what is an expository essay exactly is, and it's great we have the Intenet to help us catch up what we miss.
I hope that those responding, besides the writing errors in the ad itself, realize that several state systems subscribe to "Originality checker" software. Because even at the rates quoted, it would not be profitable if original research and writing ( beyond the internet sources, as the software searches for close similarities in wording and comparison with given reference sources). The local college uses the program and caught about 25+% the first years and it has decreased significantly since then.
