I always enjoy reading your papers, Brendan. Thank you.

Were the Strymon/Trident host coins still legal tender when they were overstruck, or had they been demonetized?

    Thank you,

This is a very weird case. It appears that the Celts in this area of Bulgaria looted substantial amounts of bronze coinage during their raids on Roman Macedonia at the end of the 2nd/ beginning of the 1st c. BC, and used the Roman/Macedonian coins to produce their own currency.

It's worth it, also. Lots of new numismatic reading all the time.

Well, I'll try to log-on later today (when I get home from work) ...

=> until then, here is my example ...

    187-168 BC
    Diameter: 16.8 mm
    Weight: 3.7 grams
Obverse: Wreathed head of the river god Strymon
    Reverse: Trident

Appears to be Celtic. Late 2nd c. BC. The Macedonian originals are very rare and quite different:

Thanks => I signed-up and took a look at your article (interesting ... thanks for sharing)

    Cheers

I'll make a note that the seller's info my be incorrect (I'll add-in that my example is most likely Celtic)
