A strike through error is a coin that when struck a piece of foreign debris, whether it be cloth, wood, metal, wire, etc was either adhered to the surface of the planchet or the die. The resulting coin bears an incuse image of the item that the coin was struck through. Here is a Peace dollar with a dramatic strike through of what I can only conclude would have been a piece of cloth or cotton. The material was thin enough in some areas that the die actually transferred some of the design through the item but in other areas was thick enough to obliterate the design.
