Recently, a friend of mine lost her dad to Pancreatic Cancer (combined with Pneumonia, and a case of Covid for a kicker). Turns out, her dad was a hoarder and had a huge crate of coins. As I'm going through them, I'll post some interesting things I find. I'm pretty sure this is a "struck through die cap" error, but if you have alternative theories I'm welcome to them. Are there any diagnostics of a genuine struck through die cap? The weight is correct. Any estimates on value?
Not a capped die coin, It is a coin struck through or with a capped die, as the OP stated correctly. Closer to being struck with a middle to late stage capped die due to partial date an liberty starting to show through the coin that is the cap. IMO. http://www.error-ref.com/struck_through_a_late_stage_die_cap/
Any idea on value on this one? Maybe @JCro57 or @Fred Weinberg would know? I'm trying to appraise this collection for my friend... disposal may be determined by value.
Ha, I just found a second one! This guy seemed to like oddballs. I can definitely make out the same 3 digits of the date on this second one, 197. I wonder if it's possible to prove it came from the same "die" - and I wonder how the value would behave if sold as a pair?
For anyone curious, I sold both of these on Ebay last night, for about $20 each. A bit lower than everyone was predicting.
