I'm going to have to agree with you on this one. actually what we call struck thru grease is really grease , dirt , metal dust and all kinds of debris mixed together and forms a solid mass. some of the letters of the die has been completely filled in plus a small area of the die around the letters was coated with the greasy mixture , this is why the coin is not smooth in this area. if someone had ground these letters off the coin the zinc core would be visible. good find lillyboots
Thanks for the info. I try not to post obvious PMD coins but this one had me bouncing between grease filled and PMD . Thanks Again and at least I got a small winner!
I don't think it is either. I think it is a planchet flaw. Those line are aligned with both the lines at the base of the bust and in the fields (most notably above LIBERTY. Although I have never seen a blob like yours, many Lincolns from that era have lines on them. Here is one of mine;
The area looks raised to me, which would mean it is recessed in the die. You can also see polishing lines...maybe it was hit with a small grinder. Larry Nienaber
