    It might be from polishing on the die.

    I'm going to have to agree with you on this one. actually what we call struck thru grease is really grease , dirt , metal dust and all kinds of debris mixed together and forms a solid mass. some of the letters of the die has been completely filled in plus a small area of the die around the letters was coated with the greasy mixture , this is why the coin is not smooth in this area. if someone had ground these letters off the coin the zinc core would be visible. good find lillyboots

    I agree with Rascal on this one.. Rick, if a dremel was used the zinc core would be showing.

    I'm going with Larry on this one because the grain passes from one side, through, and out the other.

    Now that I go back and look more carefully, and it pains me to admit this, but, I agree with Rascal.

    Actually, all those who agree with rascal should be agreeing with coin.

    Thanks for the info. I try not to post obvious PMD coins but this one had me bouncing between grease filled and PMD . Thanks Again and at least I got a small winner!

    I don't think it is either. I think it is a planchet flaw. Those line are aligned with both the lines at the base of the bust and in the fields (most notably above LIBERTY. Although I have never seen a blob like yours, many Lincolns from that era have lines on them. Here is one of mine;

    The area looks raised to me, which would mean it is recessed in the die. You can also see polishing lines...maybe it was hit with a small grinder.
