This was with out a doubt the hardest coin I have ever photographed. So after several attempts I came up with the following pics. The obverse appears, for a lack of a better word, wrinkled. My original thought was struck through some kind of cloth. The reverse show no sign of anything. Normal nickel. The edge has a raised rim running from 1 o'clock to 8 o'clock. If my temper cools a bit I can try for better pics. Any thoughts, Michael
Hey Mike, Are the different stages worth the same? That is to say a different value for early stage as opposed to late stage? Also is this struck by die cap have anything to do with the partial collar, or are they two separate errors? Thanks, Michael
Late-stage capped die strikes are worth less than early-stage. An early-stage capped die strike might show a brockage, a counterbrockage, a brockage and a counterbrockage, a double brockage, or nothing at all (in the case of a uniface die cap). All late-stage capped die strikes simply show a blurred image of the obverse design, since any design originally present on the external (working) face of the cap was obliterated a long time ago. Coins like yours generally sell for about $5 on eBay. The partial collar is a separate error.
