I found this quarter in change the other day, and since I have recently gotten into the habit of checking my change, I broke out the loupe. I noticed in the motto what looked to me like strike doubling. Now I am not thinking at all that this is die doubling, that is not my question. Since i am a new collector, and this may be the first error I have found and actually realized what it is, I just want to confirm that this is indeed strike doubling. It's very noticeable on the bottom of the S, also on the G, U, R, T, I Hopefully those pictures are sufficient. I have a great camera but the lense isn't the greatest for coins. (not macro, just the one it came with) And shooting through the loupe is a bit trickier. Anyway thanks for looking.
To me, it looks more like worn die doubling which can create some interesting looking coins. what year is the coin?
In hand under a loupe (I use 10x), it is pretty clear. I only had to look twice because I had never found doubling until now. Who knows how many doubled varieties I've had my hands on, but this is the first I found because I have been officially collecting for a few months now. Definately doesn't look like doubled die, I just wanted to see if my diagnosis of strike doubling is correct.
Hard to tell with those pics but the doubling does look flat which would make it machine. Does look very nice.
Here is a regular double die on a 63 quarter I have. I apologize for the crummy picture as it's taken through mylar in a mint set. Notice the split serif on the bottom of the R in Trust.
