i have never seen toning like this it looks like the tone(?) is chipping off http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=67083&Lot_No=24522
Well the slab rules out any AFT...I am wondering if Doug will come by and give us some insight on what may have attached to the coins surface to prevent those small areas from tonng?? Could be oil's orsomething. RickieB
it looks like in a way some sort of carbon flecking i find the coin nice of course but it is just somewhat strange how could shomething cover it in such small areas to stop in toning in those areas
In many cases that is exactly what it is doing. It sometimes happens because a coin was in an album and the plastic cover rubbed the top of the coin or the coin was touched by something else. In other cases it is because the coin was touched early in its life and those areas did not tone the same.
Heck, I can't even get the photos to load on my SLOOOWWW computer. Maybe today if I can get a few min. I'll run to the office and use the cable internet. Speedy
I doubt that PCGS would slab an expensive coin like that with AT, unless it was an insider deal. (LOL).
This type of toning is much more common that you might think. While I don't find it attractive, there's nothing to suggest to me that the toning is "flaking off"...Mike
p.s. PCGS holders AT coins all the time. Remember, they only judge "market acceptable" and "not market acceptable".
I've seen toning like that before, while not entirely attractive it is none the less seemingly natural
