Can anyone help with with what is causing this on the coin. There looks to be two (raised) rods through the eye.
It appears to be a die gouge. Remember the die is "negative" to the coin, so the deeper parts of the coin image ( the eyelid portion and the field in front of the eye is on the surface of the die and the nose is a deep recess of the die surface. So if we take a "tool" and accidentally gouge it across the surface of the die, the damage will be where you see the raised "lines". Notice it is not on the nose, as the tool couldn't reach into the incused area. Jim
Thanks Thanks for the info. I looked up feeder finger scrapes and now I'd say yes to that, too. Interesting, 'cause this explains a number of other coins I have. Appreciate the knowledge you shared.
Look up Page 219 in the VOL 2 CPG and there is a similar coin. FS-701 is Listed as Unknown Die Damage.
