Ive never seen a cent look like this before, thought it might be a scratch looked though loop but it does not interfere with the strike. Is this an error find? Thanks Noob
Incomplete copper plating. Judging from the roughness of the design rim in the area where the zinc core is exposed, the lack of plating is probably due to pre-strike damage.
Nice find, I'll tell you what how does 2¢ sound??? PM me Not an actual offer, unless the seller is willing to sell for that price. Just a joke statement please don't say/suggest I am violating CT rules by offering to buy items on our forum.
There was probably some type of contaminant on the blank (oil or maybe wax) that prevented that area from being plated.
The plating is missing because it was scraped off the planchet after the planchet was fully plated but before the strike. It is necessary to distinguish incomplete plating arising from a problem in the plating process versus plating that was removed after the plating process.
I would agree with the plating being scraped off after plating but before strike on the 2011, The surfaces still show flattened evidence of the scraping, but I see no evidence of scraping of the surface on the 2009. It looks more like there was something there that prevented the surface from being plated. The surfaces are smooth in the unplated areas.
If you look at the unplated portions of the rim of the 2009 cent you'll see a roughened appearance. These are areas of damage not smoothed out by the strike.
