I found this thing in bag of mixed contemporary coins I bought few days ago. I would like to know of witch Septimus Severus coin it is replica, or wether its sort of fantasy medallion. It is 14mm in diameter and 1.5gr Thanks.
It is a cast fake of a denarius of Septimius Severus. Obv:- L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X, laureate head right Rev:- SALVTI AVGG, Salus seated left, feeding a snake coiling up from an altar out of a patera; arm on side of throne. Rome mint RIC 119a. RSC 641 Here is a real example for comparison.
Thanks maridvnvm, I thought that it might have been a mismatch obv - rev. Whats the real coin made of and what are the measures? Regards
The real coin is made of silver. The measures vary greatly at this stage. They are typically around 16mm but their weight can range from around 2.2 gms through to 3.4 gms. The one above being 16.5 mm and 3.19 gms. Regards, Martin
I somehow tend to make a distinction between fakes and replicas. Replica in my mind is something made to look like a brand new old coin( when it was new) Fake in my book is something made to deceive someone in believing it is the real thing being xxy years old. I had no dilemma about this one, only didnt know the inspiration of it(and it came for free)
