I am sitting here today going through the last few rolls of wheat pennies in our coin collection to make sure there are no good ones in them. I have tried to take a pic of this penny but I cannot seem to take a clear enough pic so I will describe it the best I can. I think it is a 1940 Wheat penny. The reason I say think is because the 4 is funny looking. The bottom part of the 4 is missing and there is a raised line going from the triangle in four to the bottom of the 0. Its almost as if someone took the straight line in the number for and pointed it toward the bottom of the 0. Anybody seen one of these. Thanks, Wornslick
Here's a pic, its the best I can do. http://www.cointalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=63525&stc=1&d=1260393105
Thanks for your reply Treashunt. I don't know what post mint damage is but this is not a scratch. Whatever this line is it is raised above the face of the coin just like the other numbers are. Maybe if you would explain what post mint damage is I would understand.
Post mint damage is just damage done to a coin after it has left the mint. In this case it could be one of those coin counting machines. I will try to find a link to another post which shows what they can do.
Jeez, Mrs. Slick and I were just getting ready to pack our bags for the caribbean with the money I was going to sell this baby for. Thanks to all for the help.
http://www.cointalk.com/t69649-2/ - just one link and there are others. Not saying this is what was done to your coin since I really can not see it, nor am I an expert on these. Good luck!
Keep looking - there are some still varieties out there that bring big bucks. And I did get enough from one coin to pay for most of a trip to vegas.
Pmd From what I understand there are arguments about what pmd is. Purist say that anything after the downstroke of the hammer die is complete anything after that moment is pmd. Others say that anything after the coin leaves the mint is pmd. I don't know what type of damage can be done to the coin during the ejection process but it would seem to me that if there were damage it would be an error. The purist would disagree.
TuffJump- If that line you see is raised, then it is probably a die crack. Not really worth a premium if it's that small.
