Looks like a worn down 1863 Indian Head Cent to me-somewhere around $2-$3

If it is, it's the first one I've seen with stars on the front and no shield on the back???

That's actually not an Indian Head Cent. It's a Civil War Token.

That's a neat find! It looks like it has done it's share of commerce though!

Hard time tokens circulated when US coins weren't readily available for circulation. They were created to keep the US economy from sinking into deep depressions.

Look again. The rev. has been altered. I've seen these before....

It hasn't been altered, that's just the way they were made. Not One Cents were created by private mints before counterfeit laws were either written, enforced or both.

Sorry, but the" E"in the word" CENT",looked to me at first glance-like it had been altered to look like a "U".Making it read - ONE C*NT.Dosen't anyone else see that ?.

okay, i just looked at the penny...the entire outline of the E is clearly visible -- its just worn like the N is. i think that the lighting was playing tricks with the digital camera.

I can assure you that it doesn't say that. Look at my pics of the same type of token.

He's not saying it was minted to say *that*. What he is saying is that it looks like it has been altered to say *that*. IIRC, there was a similar token posted a number of months back that actually had been altered to *that* vulgarity. The original pic of this token just looked a little like the former one, even though the OP'er confirmed that the lighting created the illusion in this case.

Brings up a funny question. If someone wanted to start a special album of, uh, "adult" coins and exonumia, how challanging do you think that would be? Have you ever heard of anyone with a rated "R" collection?

Actually, I think I'll just start a another thread on this.

Look at the picture. The metal has been manipulated to create the Vulgatiry. The outline of the E would still be presant. As I said I have seen several of these before and I think, while vulgar, it gives the coin a sort of history. Possably done by some lonely CW soldier at some winter encampment, missing female companionship. A neat find.
