I work at a local store. I opened up a fresh roll of nickels. I found a nickel with some kind of crazy markings on them. It is nothing like a normal nickel. I am thinking it is some kind of mispunch. I attatched a picture of the back of it. It is a 1998.

I would suspect Post Mint, man made damage! However, if you can take and post a better close-up picture and crop out most of the background, we might be able to tell with more certainty.

If you've got a Macro feature (the little Flower icon) on your camera, that'll let you focus closer.

Also, take both side of the coin and post'em!

Someone ground the back off of it with a grinder.
Note the sharp edge jutting out from the normal edge of the coin.
That is from the metal being pushed from the back of the coin to the outside edge.
From the rough look, I'd wager it was a bench grinder with a stone wheel.

It almost looks like someone wanted to prove he could stop on a dime....

...five cents at a time. ;)

I agree that this is postmint damage.

    post-mint damage.
Look at the grain of the markings, they look like a grinding wheel's marks.
Also, the sharp edge, shows that the reverse was removed. If it had (somehow) been a blank strike there would be more rounding to the rim.
Next: It looks thinner than a normal nickel-- compare the width to a regualr nickel.

I was a mechanic in a factory for 5 years and done a lot of fabrication work.
