I was given a strange, very cool looking medal (w/ presentation case) a few years ago. Since then noone seems to be able to identify it. I know it isn't a coin but I thought someone here might be able to help identify this medal. I think it is German, pre/post WWI military since there appears to be "Regt" on the scroll, bottom right. Anyone know German? I think the photos clearly show the details. (Moderators, since this isn't coin related, please delete if necessary. Some members seemed very knowledgable on medals so I thought I'd give it a try) Medal (3 images) http://www.dotphoto.com/go.asp?l=steveervin&p=8F6E&AID=2111703
Definitely pre-WWI. "Konig" is German for King, and they didn't have one after the Treaty of Versailles. Medals are considered as part of the exonumia branch of numismatics, so threads like this are very welcome here.
Steve Regt I think is short for Regiment...so it might have been some sort of medal for a army regiment.... Looks neat.... Speedy
I might just have a one-of-a-kind here. I posted the photos on a WWI forum and even they are scratching their heads. If it can't be identified does that mean I can make up great big "exagerations" about it's identity? You know, King Ferdinands personal Medal of Honor that was given to him by the Great emporer of Prussia made of solid "gray" gold the rarist on earth.
Looks like the mystery is solved. I was told that the medal is a Bavarian Veterans Badge (mid-late 1800's) awarded to veterans of the 1st Bavarian infantry regiment. There were several types available that could be purchased by veterans, the more money you dished out, the better grade of medal you received. I was told that this particular one would have been a higher grade example due to the detail of the designs, gold-like accents and the overall size. Bottom of medal reads: In honor of belonging to the 1st Bavarian inf. regt., the Kaisers 1st Inf. Regt. So much for the "rare" gray gold!!
