I went through some uncleaned lots I bought years ago and came across this coin. I don't remember seeing it before. So I started to clean it off a bit and noticed a cross or double cross. I got a lot of it off but wow is it thin. I have to stop myself before I rush it and damage it. All the coins it came with were Constantine era. I was thinking Medieval but I can make guesses all day. I can see what looks to be a person with maybe a helmet facing left. (12 o'clock) This side has a double cross. Anyone know where to start? Its hard to get photos since this coins is very dark.
Its a denar from Hungary, specifically: Hungary: Lajos (1342-1382) Denár (Huszár-547, Unger-432d) Obv: + MOnETA LODOVICI, Saracen head facing left Rev: + REGIS hVnGARIE, Patriarchal cross with random pellets, lily; S in fields beneath cross-arms
A very common coin that isn't worth much. But I wouldn't clean it, I like it's crusty look. Value? about $20. Louis I (Ludwig I) (1342-1382A.D.) AR Denar O: +MONETA LODOVICI, Head of Seracen left. R: REGIS HVNGARIE, patriarchal cross. .6g 15mm
Thanks Quant.Geek, Oldhoopster, Milesofwho and Mat. This will be my first Medieval coin. I won't clean anymore of it. I was just shocked to find it in a mix of LRB but it probably happens all the time with sellers. This lot came from Crusty Romans back in 2014 when I was buying them for my nephew. Thank you all for the information and I'll read up on it.
I've got a couple of weird ones from Crusty Romans as well including a Hungarian piece, a 20 piastre coin of Libya, one with a cross I could never identify (I believe it to be late Byzantine) - don't know how such coins came to be mixed in with LRBs.
Very cool find! I have found some oddball stuff in groups of lrbs before too. Who knows what happens to these groups: when were then buried, what hands they went through after being dug up. I would lean towards thid being added after discovery in between the original finder and the seller you got it from.
Crusty Romans was the 1st peep i bought ancients from back in 2004... wow...i remembered the name as "Rusty" Romans but it was Crusty...^^
