Hello, I found these quarters in a roll of Yellowstones- there was a total of 8 with this same mark. Should I keep them, or discard? Also, is this an erroneous dime? Thank you.
Keep the quarters. Looks like it was missing some metal on the planchet. Spend the dime. I've seen a bunch like that. Not sure what causes it though.
NewToCoins, it would behoove you to take the time to re-post this thread in the ERROR section of CoinChat, it is listed in the Coin Forum tab, I'm certain you will attract some qualified opinions there. There are many crossover readers, but that page is dedicated to error coins and if you pulled 8 out of one roll this is not a single type anomaly due to a planchet flaw, you are looking at die issues, which could be interesting. Edit: Not to say that you wouldn't get qualified answers here as some have already posted, just saying you have an alternate source.
I'm not sure what the exact cause is, but I can say that this type of error seems to be extremely common, especially on quarters. I've come across hundreds of quarters like this throughout the state quarter program and even some recent nickels with the same type of marks. Since they seem to be very common I've just been treating them like poor strikes or damaged coins and spending them. I dug through my spending change dish and pulled out Kansas quarter with the same problem on the reverse. My crappy photo kind of makes it look like a bad scuff mark or scratches, but it's definitely not post mint damage. It looks more like part of the planchet flaked off, or (more likely) a glob of grease or something was on the die.
