During my 3rd box of Penny Coin Roll hunting I found this strange looking 1988D penny. Anyone ever seen one like such??? Would be interested to see others out there if this is in fact a coin error.

I would have guessed that this is a PMD but, the indentation of the mint mark outline is too perfect.

    Thoughts???

    Cheers!

I think I might have found the answer to my question. Has anyone ever seen a coin which shows the characteristics of a broken punch???

I think this might be it... Thoughts???

The copper plating around the mintmark split when the coin was struck. the result is that the zinc underneath is starting to rot. this is environmental damage and given enough time the mintmark will fall off that coin.
