Since I finally have the time and money to get back into collecting in a serious way I started to upgrade and fill in my wheat set. I'm starting w/ 1958's and working backwards buying the best raw examples that I can find (red so far). One question that has been nagging me, and I've looked into a number of options, is how to store the set. I dont want the coins to tone and dont want to get them slabbed. Right now I have the stored in the cardboard/mylar 1x1's in holder sheets in a 3 ring binder. Is this ok or are there better options to go with? Thanks in advance.
Airtights are a personal favorite; there's always a Dansco but after seeing some of the surprisingly noticeable damage that those little sliding sleeves can cause to the surface of a coin, I'm not sure I'd do that. But 2x2's in a binder are so boring.... I know exactly how you feel and I think if I were you, and if time/money permitted, I'd get airtights for each as well as some sort of custom display case with 150+ slots to fit every mintmark (I think there are 138 different lincoln date/MM not including the errors). Of course with aesthetics you often times sacrifice security.... really depends on how you want them to be stored; out in the open or hidden in a big ole' safe.
I'm going to post pics soon. Kointainers that direct fit the coin. make a ream to widen the holes in an Intercept or Dansco. I'll post the finer points of that after I have the process down. I am trying to find some round aluminum stock. Anyways, toss the slides and push the coin (carefully) into the widened hole! Presto!
