I had the opportunity this week to talk with the engineers from the company that Makes Sentry Safes. They offer a variety of safes in sizes and prices. Some of their safes are listed as waterproof and or fireproof. Read the information on each safe. Safes are rated fireproof or waterproof by how long they will protect the contents at various temperatures. One of the fireproof safes is only good for 1/2 hour, others for much longer Some of their safes are molded. According to the engineers, even though they are molded from PLASTIC there is NO PVC in the content of these safes. Many of their safes are made of steel and like the molded safes are excellent for storage of coins, and are available from places like Wal Mart for a very low price. So when making a decision about how to store your coins safely, It is just as important to read about the storage container, before you buy it as it is to research a coin before you buy it.
Can anyone recommend a good safe, I remember someone had bought a nice safe for $450.00 or so. It was from some hardware store....any help would be appreciated. tia
Did they also tell you that if some gets your safe all they have to do is send the # number on the side and $7.00 with your name and they will send you 2 keys that will open it?? That is how I got mine....I got the safe for free at an auction because no one wanted it.... Speedy
Just another note that people sometimes don't realize... The contents might not burn, however the temps. could be high enough to melt the things inside (such as what you put all those fancy bills and coins in). Lamination is a wonderful thing for value so I hear, not to mention it makes everything smooth and shiny like.
I have one of these, stored next to an outside wall of my house. It's in an unlikely location to burn completely even if the house is a total loss. You can't ever guarantee the survival of stuff, but you can maximize your chances.
safes I'm going to pick up my safe friday. It is a pella security gun safe. It's rated at 1500 degrees for 50 minutes. It will hold my guns as well as my coins and not easily carted away, it weighs 750 lbs.
If you get some very heavy lead plates, and put 500 pounds or so of them in the bottom, no one will be getting those coins : ) Thats what's in the bottom of my safe. Sentimental stuff is stored in there, not much of monetary value.
I just keep my good stuff in a safety deposit box at the bank. Then again I don't have such extensive collections as others do here at cointalk.
And after that I can't put any coins in the safe!!!!!! Good idea though...if I ever get a bigger one it might be a good idea. Speedy
if you do have a 750 pound safe with 500 pounds of stuff in it... make sure your floor will suport it I have heard storys about pier and beam houses having nice safe size chunks taken out of them by unlucky owners!
This thread shows how tough it is to absolutely protect anything. I keep high valued coins in a safe deposit box.
Out in the open Have you heard of the collectors who leave their safes in the open Junk in them. Have a second safe with good stuff hidden away. Not a bad idea- just takes more money.
new safe Picked up my safe last night. It's a big relief to know my valuables are a little safer now. Mine looks like this pic only painted maroon.
new safe I could hide in it, but I keep guns and coins in it. I was surprised how fast it it filled up. a couple boxes of mint sets and proofs, many comems, and my collections of old coins. Also a boatload of state Quarters.
