A friend came across this old Korean Coin catalogue published in Korean in 1984. In it, I found the names of the designers listed for many coins/notes that I hadn't been aware of before! Way cool. Thanks to a kind person (Dick Johnson) who answered my inquiry about this last year at CT, I know that the engraving work for the 100 Hwan coin (1959) was done by U.S. Mint engraver, Engelhardus von Hebel. Now, thanks to this new catalogue find, I discovered the artist who drew the original design was Kim Ki-hwan of the S. Korean Mint. Here are some pages from this 1984 catalogue (below). I wonder why the Koreans got away from explicitly naming the designers of their currency? You don't see designer names listed anymore in Korean numismatic literature... My original inquiry into the 100 Hwan coin at CT is here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/us-mint-engraver-with-the-initials-evh.241728/
No wonder old catalogs can still remain valuable! mlov - by any chance do they mention the designers of the older Korean coins, in particular coins struck from 1888 to 1910?
Yeah, wouldn't that be nice? Of course it doesn't mention the designers of anything prior to 1948. But it was the first thing I looked for after I realized that this catalogue mentioned designers.
