STEEL PENNY MINTMARK

    Ok, let me apologize for the condition of the coin and the lousy photos of what is no doubt just a damaged coin.

    But I have to ask...

    Going through some of Dad’s coins and working through his slightly sizable stash of wheat pennies. I noticed the S mintmark on this steelie and I cant tell what it is. I mean is it just smashed as it traveled through life as a POST MINT DAMAGED coin or something else.

    looks like just pitted like old rusty steel does. looks like it was cleaned off at one point years ago. but whatever was used cant get into them small spaces. that's my two cents.

    It's an S. In premium shape the S is better than the D or Philly,
    but that being said these coins were produced in massive numbers.
    I can't tell what that stuff is on your coin, but it's worth around a nickel.
    Dealers have boxes of these coins for 15 cents apiece. You really need
    an AU or MS example in the steelies to have anything.
