the steel pennies were ONLY made in the year 1943 to save material for the war effort during WWII. These pennies were lapped up by many people as a peculiority or as an "investment" These pennies have a premium over other wheat cents from the same time period. Mr. Davis was very kind in giving me a set of 1943, 1943 d, and 1943 s coins that he put together himself. I should show you them sometime
1943 was not the only year in which the materies used to make the Lincoln Cent were modified due to the need for copper for the war. In 1994 and 1945, Lincoln cents were made from recycled shell casings!
yes, bronze was used in old indian head pennies and early wheatie cents. Copper was used in coins from 1944- 1961 (including the shell case cents of 1944, 1945, and 1946)
From 1946 until 1982 Lincoln cents were made from 95% copper and 5% zinc. From 1982 until the present, they were made from around 98% zinc and 2% copper.
wartime steel cents look like any ordinary wheatie cent (lincoln cents with an old design from 1909- 1959) except that they are silvery in color, like copper-nickel dimes and quarters
well, the rarest lincoln penny is probably the 1909 s vdb. I'm not sure about the Indian cents, tho. Let me check
